About the Virtual Museum of Bacteria

The Virtual Museum of Bacteria was started with support of The Foundation of Bacteria, a non-profit organization for education and propagation of bacteriology (founder: Martin J. Blaser). Curator and writer of this museum is Trudy M. Wassenaar. We received further financial support from the The Waksman Foundation for Microbiology to write the special feature files.

After 6 years, our financial resources have dried up
The curator will no longer update pages or repair broken links, although all displays will remain available on-line.

here you'll find the answers to the following questions:

This museum is a collection of internet sites on all aspects of bacteria and bacteriology. Your curator surfs the web on a regular basis to look new sites, and interesting findings are hyperlinked in the textual displays of this museum. The curator is responsible for the selection of the links and for the exhibits that explain the basic principles of bacteriology, however no responsibility is held for the contents of links outside this museum. All outbound links are credited. The 'exhibits' of the museum contain text only. This enables easy access for every visitor. Not everybody has the fastest of computers. Text only is still the most efficient way to get information across. However, as soon as you click on one of the outside links (the one crediting the 'source') you'll quickly see what fancy websites are fashionable nowadays. And there are lots of pictures of bacteria available on the web. See our special feature file: images of bacteria. If you want to see a certain species, you can check our species files. When available, we insert links to pictures at the top of a species file. Some of the links may be Java supported or use frames. Our site does not use either, so that whatever machine or browser you're using, you can enjoy the exhibits. Everybody with an interest in bacteria! The exhibits are kept simple and informative for all to enjoy. The level of the incorporated links may vary, but we try to select links for a general interest. The professional user (bacteriologists et al.) will enjoy the professional exhibits. These list as many internet resources as we could find for you. Suggestions for sites not yet included are always welcome. The 5 main subject catagories in which the permanent displays are incorporated are available from the top banner: 'choose catagory'. Pick the one you want and press 'go'. The exhibits within the subject catagories pop up as clickable text in the niche. When you're done with an exhibit you can jump to another niche within a catagory using the right-hand pull-down menue. Remember you can only jump to another exhibit within a subject catagory in this way. If you want to go to an exhibit in another catagory, go to that catagory first.
You can also use the site map (available as button in the top banner) to find your way, either by using the clickable graphic, or the list of exhibits below it. Many exhibits are linked within the text. When you go to the main hall, you can move left or right to find new categroies. When you click on an outside link, it opens in a new window and you'll be able to surf from that location. To re-enter the museum, just continue in the original museum window. Well, not a lot these days. The site will no longer be updated or expanded. Displays will remain on-line but links will no longer be repaired. We have served you for over 6 years. It is time to move on to novel challenges. It has been a pleasure developing this museum, and we hope you have enjoyed us, and will enjoy it in future, even if there will be no novel exhibits
